Julio Magdaleno

After looking at some pictures of magazines this picture in particular got my attention because it has elements that most cigarette pictures have. For example, in the background you can see people happy, smiling, screaming, people with their hands in the air. You can automatically tell that there is some type of celebration. The background automatically set the stage for me and gave me a feeling of excitement or happiness. Then in the middle of the picture you see a young nice lady with a guy in much more focus. You can tell because you can see their shiny hair, white teeth, big smiles, and that Newport cigarette in their hand. The couple seem as if they are in perfect health all nice and clean. However, this is the exact opposite result that cigarettes have. They always try to show people that are healthy and having a good time. They even incorporate an element of sex because at the bottom it says Newport Pleasure, FIRE IT UP! Also, there is a picture of the various kinds of Newport packs next to the text. The text connects with the image because they are both smiling and kind of close to each other. Even though the surgeon general's warning is at the top left corner, people still don't realize what it means. The warning means poison. However this works because the people in charge of advertising have wasted tons and tons of money because they know that it works.
